Systems Engineering as Key for Development of Electrified Powertrains

Abstract:
Electrification of the powertrain is seen as a key technology in order to achieve future CO2 legislation.
However, electrification adds complexity to the development of automotive powertrains due to the following points:
  • Multiple torque providers as traction elements (engine, motors)
  • Complex safety requirements (e.g. due to high voltage devices)
  • New and highly integrated interactions between powertrain and vehicle  (e.g. braking system and recuperation)
  • Interactive controls requirements
  • Lack of field history
Managing the complexity requires a refined methodology and disciplined systems engineering approach that balances and optimizes system requirements.
The presentation covers an overview of the five main systems activities (Powertrain System Design, Vehicle and Powertrain Simulation, Powertrain and Vehicle Integration, System Safety and Powertrain and Vehicle Validation) and shows representative application examples.
