ACTUAL TENDENCIES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TURBOCHARGING SYSTEMS IN IC COMBUSTION ENGINES

The most important tendencies in the development of super- and turbocharging systems for high-speed internal combustion engines have been discussed in the paper. These tendencies are resulting from important aspects of expected changes and improvements in the design, operating and control of modern automotive engines. They are: lowering of engine fuel consumption, hard restrictions on emission of toxic compounds, especially of CO2, growing rule of super- and turbocharging in engine development as a result of engine downsizing. Nowadays it can be observed, that in modern high-speed turbocharged engines the operational indexes are achieving very good values, what was not expected even only few years ago. From the analysis discussed in the paper some further improvements can be foreseen, but also restrictions and barriers should be seen and noted. Based on the review of newest engine developments and recently achieved results concerning operational data and power indicators in automotive IC engines the recent improvements and changes in the design and control of turbocharging systems have been characterised and discussed. Most important corrections in design and operating control in chargers and turbines have been also described. In the final remarks and conclusions the actual state-of-art of the development of modern super- and turbocharging systems for IC engines has been defined and described.
