Analysis of the microstructure of the fuel spray atomized by marine injector

One of the main issues influencing the combustion process in the cylinder of the marine engine is an injector and the fuel spray. The injection and the atomization of fuel into the combustion chamber is followed by evaporation, mixing and consequently the spontaneous self-ignition. The process of the atomization and formation of the fuel spray is described with the parameters of the macrostructure and the microstructure. Knowledge of these parameters may be a key information to conduct further optimization of the combustion process. The microstructure parameters of the fuel spray determine the quality and homogeneity of the spray. These parameters have direct influence on the shape of the fuel spray. This article presents the research results of the microstructure parameters of the fuel spray atomized with the marine injector. The specificity of the phenomena occurring in the marine engine cylinder was the reason to use the optical visualization method in the studies. Bench testing was conducted in the laboratory of the Institute of Heat Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology. A measurement technique, named Laser Induced Fluorescence in the combination with Mie scattering was used to register the fuel injection. Fuel injection was realized with the marine injector fueled with diesel oil through the common rail system. The work space consisted of a constant volume chamber. Two quick video recorders with the optical filters were used. Double-pulsed Nd:YAG laser emitting light with a wavelength of λ=266 nm was used as the lightening.
