Combustion and heat release analysis in an opposed-piston engine

The paper presents an analysis of the combustion and heat release process in the 2-stroke opposed-piston PAMAR-4 engine. The engine was tested on gasoline with direct injection into the combustion chamber with spark ignition. A short description of test stand and fuel delivery method were given. A comparison of the combustion process was made between the 0-dimensional model adapted to the opposed-piston engines with chemical kinetics and results obtained from the test stand. The results of the gross heat release were presented and net heat release was calculated basing on approximated measurements of heat loses. For this purpose, the average in-cylinder gas temperature and cylinder wall temperatures together with heat transfer coefficients were determined. The differences between the results were analyzed and the uncertainty of the TDC determination in engines of such type in the context of the variable phase shift was highlighted. Obtained results indicate the potential for an increased efficiency and a high power concentration in the opposed-piston engines.
