Thermal Protection for Piezoquarz Pressure Sensor During High Temperature Measurements

During investigation of a dynamic combustion processes (e.g. rotating detonation), there is a need of use of a high-frequency pressure sensors located as close to the flame region as it is possible. Traditional separation from the flame with the use of a intermediate tube of appropriate length is in such measurements practically useless, because of measurement signal distortion. In the other hand high-quality piezoquarz sensor dedicated for such measurements is rather expensive (sometimes couple of thousands Euros) and can be easily destroyed in a seconds, so the need of use "high efficient - small distortion" sensor protection is obvious. In our experiments (on rotating detonation rocket engine) we need to measure "steep" pressure pulsations of a few bar amplitude and dozen kHz frequency in the flame region (theoretical peak temperature over 3000 K), so we had to elaborate a right thermal protection for our sensors. We tested a few solutions of sensor protection - thermal protection efficiency was investigated in "hot way" (on tested engine) by qualitative comparison ("zero" drift speed) and distortion quality was tested with the use of a shock tube (comparison of pressure course registered by protected and "bold" sensor). The article presents a few practical solutions for the sensor protection problem, describes their advantages and disadvantages and shows results of their comparative tests.
