Electric Propulsion in Automotive Powertrain General Overview
Drive for clean environment enforced by law regulations is changing a shape of automotive industry. Strict emission standards challenge state of the art automotive technology and influence trends in an automotive powertrain. A dominating position of an internal combustion engine is challenged by an electric powertrain. The electric powertrain suffers of a low energy density battery that results in either limited operating range or mass increase while hydrogen supplied fuel cell is foreseen as an ultimate source of energy. However, neither of the electric powertrain concepts may solve the polution problem unless the energy is generated in a clean process. The electric powertrain will also require change of the mindset on vehicle’s purpose from transportation device to a mobile energy bank that is also a part of the electric power system tied with vehicle-to-grid interface. The perception change and social acceptance togeher with technology deployment lead time will seek for an intermittent solution that will shape the nearest future.
The presentation provides a general overview on the vehicle’s powertrain architecture, compares and contrasts energy sources and finally characterises current trends and future perspective for automotive powertrain.
