Determination of the rheological parameters of engine oils containing a coolant

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of temperature on the dynamic viscosity of engine oils and mixtures of oils with coolants. The study used engine oils recommended for compression ignition engines. The study was to answer the question of whether and how the dynamic viscosity of lubricating oils would change when, during an engine failure (a damaged head gasket, a cylinder liner rapture, etc.), a coolant enters the engine oil. Five-, twenty- and fifty-percent (v/v) contents of the coolant in the engine oil were analyzed, respectively. During the study, the dynamic viscosity was determined in the temperature range from 0°C to 50°C. The study showed that the dynamic viscosity increases with decreasing temperature in the case of pure engine oils and mixtures containing 5% and 20% (v/v) of the coolant, respectively. The coolant was characterized by the lowest value in the studied temperature range. In contrast, the dynamic viscosity of TEDEXZ oils was in the range of approx. 870 mPas at 0°C to 50 mPas at 50°C.
