World-wide trends in reactivity controlled compression ignition

The transport sector and power generation industry are currently under immense pressure to reduce their carbon dioxide footprint while compiling with stringing toxic emission regulation. While rapidly progressing electrification offers partial solution to the problem, combustion engines evolve to meet the requirements of energy transition. Tailored-made synthetic fuels, as renewable energy capacitors, boost the emergence of radically new combustion technologies with reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) being currently on the edge of application in heavy-duty transport and power generation.
The present work summarizes the main developments in RCCI, from the aspect of four main technological enablers: (i) fundamental level understanding and process phenomenology, (ii) optimal load-range extension, (iii) combustion modeling and simulation, (iv) and engine control. It finally aims to provide a clear picture how developments in these individual domains enable a breakthrough the RCCI technology. Namely combining state of the art toolchains from all above domains into a complete model-based development routine enables managing system complexity –a primary challenge for efficient and clean combustion engines of the future.
